Personal Qualifications
COOL, CALM, AND COLLECTED, confident, organized, and focused. These are all traits of a great life coach.
People usually seek out the services of an adviser or mentor during a difficult time in their lives, and the last thing they want to see is a frazzled life coach. They need to consult with someone who is strong, self-assured, and knows what to do.
Life coaches are visionaries. It is not enough for you to understand what the problem is and the challenges an individual faces. One must be able to envision the outcome, how a problem can be solved, the way similar crises can be avoided in the future, and the steps needed to be taken to achieve solutions.
To determine how you can help someone, you have to be a good listener. The sessions you have with clients are not about what you have to say but about what your clients are thinking. Great life coaches truly absorb what their clients are saying. These coaches know what questions to ask and can detect whether their clients are being completely open and forthright with them.
You want to learn as much about a client as you can. So being naturally curious is a good trait to have in this work. Understanding a clientâs preferences, views, and beliefs will help you put together a plan to guide that person.
Once you have listened carefully, you have to communicate your ideas and perspective to your client. As in any relationship, communication is a key element.
Be honest about your views. If you offer suggestions and you do not feel that your client is giving 100 percent to implement the changes you proposed, you have to say that.
Clients know if they are putting in the work that is required, and they will respect you if you point out when you feel they are making only a lackluster attempt to effect serious life changes. Putting oneâs life in a new, courageous direction takes true dedication, and you must convey that to each of your clients if these individuals are going to accomplish what they set out to do and get their moneyâs worth from your services.
Being observant is crucial. You have to pick up on the little things. If you say something to a client and see doubt expressed or a raised eyebrow or a sigh, do not let it go. Question it. If clients leave a session feeling uncertain or uneasy about a plan of action you proposed, they wonât be totally committed to implementing the plan and the ideas discussed in the session. Picking up on any reservations a client might have and working out those qualms immediately yield much better results when it comes to improving lives.
Part of your job is being compassionate and supportive. These traits are a must for any life coach.
You also have to be innovative, always looking for new ways to solve age-old problems. Finding a novel way to engage and reinvigorate a client who is just tired of getting the some
